Larp House Presents: Sign

Larp House Presents: SIGN

A silent game for 3-6+ players in 2 hours.

Nicaragua in the 1970s had no form of sign language. If you were deaf, you had simple gestures with a trusted few, likely nothing more than a form of pantomime you negotiated with your family to meet basic needs. In 1977, something happened. Fifty deaf children from across the country were brought together to an experimental school in Managua. Without a shared language to express themselves, the children did the only thing they could – they created one. In Sign, we follow a small piece of their journey.

WHAT:  Sign, a LARP (Live Action Role Play) about communication and being understood

Designed by Kathryn Hymes & Hakan Seyalioglu

Organized by Perigrine Winkle and Kathy Shane

WHEN:

Sunday October 8,  5- 8PM

Together, as a group of young children and there teacher, we will share the frustration and loneliness of not having a language. We’ll slowly develop the tools necessary to express what’s important to us. We will explore which words we choose to define together, and what that says about ourselves, our deepest desires, and the relationships we build.

If we have more than 6 players we may offer two classrooms.

THEMES:

Communication, Language, Discovery, Childhood

REGISTRATION:

If you are interested in playing, please email Kathy Shane by October 1, 2017 at[email protected]

PLAY STYLE:

The game takes place in a classroom of children ages 7-10 and a teacher, using pre-defined characters, minimal props, high levels of improv, and freeform play.  It is entirely silent.  There will be warm up exercises to get used to playing in silence, followed by three classes, three recesses, and a final class. There are no mechanics (dice, playing cards, etc.) and you do not need to know “the rules” or “how to LARP” to play this game. There will be a verbal debrief after the game to share your experience.

COSTUMING:

No costuming required, but the characters are all children in the 1970s. Feel free to portray that as and how you wish.

WHERE:

A North Minneapolis Nonprofit located near Broadway and Emerson Avenue.  There is excellent bus service, but I will make very effort to arrange rides if requested due to limited Sunday bus service.  Anyone requesting a ride should provide 1 full weeks notice.

We are requesting a voluntary good will donation $5-10 to support the work of the nonprofit in appreciation for the use of their space. No one will be turned away if they are unable to make a donation

OTHER DETAILS:

Light snacks will be served .
