Difficulties can arise when different cultures meet on uneven terms.
Strangers is a live action roleplaying game about immigration and refugees. Players explore the emotional experience of refugees and the people who they now must live among; one group feeling ownership over a country, the other trying to either fit in or create ways to maintain their own culture.
This acclaimed scenario by the genre-defining designer Nina Runa Essendrop has been the toast of European festivals and North American larp conventions. Known for her profoundly emotional and movement-based games, we are thrilled to bring Nina’s Strangers to Minnesota for the first time!

Story
Two cultures make contact for the first time during a refugee crisis. Members of one culture will need to leave their home, and come to reside within the other culture’s space.
Players explore the emotional experience of refugees and the people who they now must live among; one group feeling ownership over a country, the other trying to either fit in or create ways to maintain their own culture.
Techniques
Strangers is an entirely non-verbal larp. Players build character, culture, and a few shared gestures for communication through movement during the workshop before play.

Content Notice
This is a game about immigrant and refugee experiences. Players may experience the possibility of alienation, loneliness, loss of self or culture.
Costuming
No costuming needed, though do plan to wear something you’re willing to pin a ribbon to and that’s comfortable to move in. This game was written in a black box style, where players can either wear all black or regular street clothes. To comply with our venue’s policies, don’t bring any weapon props.
Covid policy
N95 respirators or better are required for everyone at this event, and we will have a few to share.
We strongly recommend all attendees get the Fall 2025 covid vaccine before attending this event. The Minnesota Department of Health has stated that in Minnesota you don’t need a reason or to be at extra risk to receive this important annual vaccination.
If you have any symptoms of COVID-19, stay home. If you are able to, take a rapid test before arrival. Please reach out if you have any questions about our policy.

Other Information
Calibration and Consent Tools
Characters will be developed during a movement based workshop before play.
Following play, we will debrief to discuss our experiences and shed the roles we assumed for the game, as well as connect back to the theme of the refugee experience. The debrief is encouraged, but not required, and players are always free to leave for their well-being.
Social
After the event some folks will get take out from one of Richfield’s many immigrant owned restaurants and eat it at Augsburg Park, adjacent to the library. Hanging out afterwards is totally optional, and we think it’s fun to get to know your fellow players as people, not just as their characters. Folks who didn’t attend the event are welcome to attend this part.
Accessibility
Players will need to move through the space, likely need to kneel or sit on the floor, express themselves with movement and gestures (rather than spoken words), and respond to audio cues. Game space will have low lighting, but players will only need to read two words during play.
Our venue is climate controlled. Our play space has plenty of seating, and is located on the main level. The main entrance has double doors that can be opened by button-push, there is one accessible restroom on the main level.
Water will be available, and we recommend bringing a water bottle for your ease of access.
Please reach out if you’ve got any accessibility questions or to request accommodations.
Minors
This larp might be appropriate for a someone under 18 years old, depending on their prior roleplaying experience and comfort playing a non-verbal game. Since Larp House is an all-volunteer group without a legal entity, we require a parent or guardian to attend alongside any minor who’d like to participate. By all means reach out if you are unsure if this larp is a good fit for your child.
