Larp House Presents: DERANGED

Deranged is a historical, musical drama about the boundaries between genius and madness. The aging, deranged Robert Schumann who on his deathbed, ill with Syphilis and Mercury poisoning, revisits the memories of the people that had an important impact on his life. Schumann has decided that he will create one last, great masterpiece before his death. A piece built on the memories of his life with Clara Wieck, Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn, and Johannes Brahms, who drifted in and out of his life and gave it nerve and excitement. But the memories are collapsing and merging with the madness, so it is difficult for Schumann to distinguish between reality and fantasy. And like one’s memories can be revisited so can the scenes of this scenario. Because perhaps the memories would be better if things had happened in a slightly different way?

Larp House Presents: Sign

Larp House Presents: SIGN

A silent game for 3-6+ players in 2 hours.

Nicaragua in the 1970s had no form of sign language. If you were deaf, you had simple gestures with a trusted few, likely nothing more than a form of pantomime you negotiated with your family to meet basic needs. In 1977, something happened. Fifty deaf children from across the country were brought together to an experimental school in Managua. Without a shared language to express themselves, the children did the only thing they could – they created one. In Sign, we follow a small piece of their journey.

A (Belated) 2016 Year in Review

As the new officers take on their roles and I shift out of being Creative Director I’d like to take a moment to recognize our accomplishments over the past year.

We ran a lot of larps in 2016. We ran 8 larps, more than 1 every other month, with more larps in a year than we’ve ever done since our founding. There were 21 different people (35 players in total) at these different events. Larp themes ran the gamut from resistance and betrayal to love and frivolity.

In 2016 a new larp organization was named in homage to us, North Carolina’s Larp Shack. We still aren’t making as much money as the other Larp House, since we are all-volunteer and our events are free and open to the public.

I’ve personally been very pleased with our ability to be a vehicle for playtests, new games, and under-appreciated gems by lesser known designers.

I also want to take a moment to shout out to Molly Forsythe. Fully 80% of my job was copy pasting emails that they wrote, so all that organizational work up front is paying off! The fact that I couldn’t just copy paste this email is probably why it took so long to send out!

In the year ahead I look forward to another year of locally-grown fun. I’m excited to take part in the diverse, enjoyable, and inspiring larps of 2017!

Sincerely,

Tom Fendt
